In health care, the best medicine is no medicine at all. Preventive measures keep the doctor at bay; being and staying healthy involves turning that exercise program into a daily habit. Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin offers many programs through its Community Outreach & Education department. These programs educate, screen, and help individuals keep themselves healthy. Classes and programs help individuals manage a variety of health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Other components of Provena St. Joeseph’s wellness program include massage therapy, Reiki, Tai Chi, and three different levels of yoga classes (beginners, health and seniors). The hospital’s focus on a person’s overall wellbeing helps people stay healthy longer, and when they are sick, get healthy quicker. These programs address individual health needs, resulting in better care and more satisfied patients.

The City of Elgin is known for historic architecture and landmarks from the Victorian era, including some exquisite examples of homes in the Queen Anne style. Many of the most remarkable homes once belonged to National Watch Company executives. Many interesting Sears Catalog Homes arrived as kits in Elgin from 1908 to 1940.
Before Victorian homes, homes were made of native cobblestone. Elgin had the largest concentration of cobblestone homes outside of Rochester, New York. Several of these, built by the earliest settlers, still stand and can be seen in Elgin’s historic districts, two of which have been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
For outdoor leisure, try a long, lazy afternoon at Lord’s Park. This 111-acre park houses a zoo with bison, elk, and baby farm animals. There are basketball and tennis courts and a children’s play area. The Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and Anthropology on the grounds of Lord’s Park is the oldest building in Illinois built expressly as a museum, and is still serving that purpose.
At Wing Park you can unwind, follow the bike path for a little exercise, picnic, or play a nine-hole round of golf on the course that was designed and built in 1908.
For a full 18-holes, head over to The Highlands on Sports Way and soak up some gorgeous scenery. There is a practice facility here with grass tees and a 9,000-square-foot putting green. (Individual or group lessons are also available by appointment.)
